Portex 'Cole' type tracheal tube, single use

Accession #: 2009101

Description: Labelled ' PORTEX TRACHEAL END ID 3.0/4.5 OD'. The size '3.0' refers to the tip of the tube that would be introduced between the vocal cords into the trachea. The shoulder, proximal to it, where the tube becomes a '4.5 mm' I.D. tube, is intended to abutt against the laryngeal inlet and prevent the tube from being introduced too deeply, ensuring that inadvertent intubation of one or other main bronchus is impossible. The tubes were largely abandoned because of reports of laryngeal damage occasioned by pressure from the shoulder. Nevertheless, they found favour for short term use during resuscitation procedures in maternity situations.
