Bacterioloy swab in glass tube & wooden case

Description: The wooden case is labelled 'Medical Research Council, Public Health Laboratory Service, Institute of Preventive Medicine, The Parade, Cardiff. The laboratories were closed and the building was gutted and refurbished for other University departments when the University Hospital of Wales opened and the laboratoriess were transferred there.

The wooden outer container is typical of the method of protecting glass medical/pharmaceutical conainers before the advent of plastics. Some wooden containers were turned and of elaborate and skilfull manufacture. They came under the general heading of 'Treen'.
